Site Map Redesign
5 week project to redesign eBay's site map. As the lead interaction designer, I was responsible for the layout, hierarchy, and overall look and feel.

Process
The original eBay site map had several usability problems, in addition to the fact that it didn't correctly reflect the architecture of the eBay site. Most notably, the layout of the site map made scanning difficult. Experienced users often resorted to using “Control+F” to find links they knew were on the page but that they couldn't locate. For new users, the experience of using the site map was overwhelming and often ended with them giving up.

We started the design process by gathering data on usability issues with the current site map as well as researching industry best practices for site maps and site indexes. We also developed a prioritized list of user and business goals that our design should support. This was an important step in our process; when we were faced with a difficult design challenge, we could go back to those goals and design the most appropriate solution.

I created initial wireframes to communicate a recommended design direction among the project team. With the help of the product manager, content manager, and creative designer, I created several iterations of the design. We then gathered feedback from internal stakeholders as well as eBay users. This feedback was invaluable to the success of the project.

Because of the disruption a new site map might cause to our users, we developed a transition plan that included releasing a beta version of the new design and keeping the old site map active for a period of time. The new site map launched to a receptive audience in September, 2005.
